Q: How do we connect a Chromebook to our home printer?

A: Home printers can be a bit of a challenge. However, the following resources should get you up and running:

  1. Google's setup guide covers most situations and is the best place to start.

  2. Be sure to check the printer manufacturer’s website for instructions to connect your specific model to a Chromebook.

  3. This guide from Google offers additional helpful info and another method for connecting a Chromebook to a printer.

  4. If all else fails, contact our parent support help desk for additional assistance.

Q: Why can’t my kids email me or receive email from me on their St. Charles account?

A: We do not allow the students to send/receive messages to/from external addresses for their safety. If you need to share something with them, you can try to log into a personal Gmail account on the Chromebook.

Q: How can our child log into Clever?

A: There are several ways to do this.


  1. If you have a St. Charles issued Chromebook:

    • At the login in screen, click Next to use a Clever badge

    • OR click Sign in with a different account to log in with Google credentials

Q: How do I make my child's St. Charles issued Chromebook connect automatically to my home WiFi?

  1. After your child logs into the device, click in the clock area (lower-right)

  2. From the menu that appears click the gear icon to access Settings

  3. Click Network from the left side

  4. Under the Network heading, click WiFi

  5. Click on the currently connected network name

  6. In this area, look for Automatically connect to this network and make sure the slider is switched on

The Chromebook should now automatically connect to your network.


Q: My child's Chromebook is charged but won't turn on, what do I do?

  1. If the power light is on, press and hold the power button until the light goes off.

  2. Press and hold Refresh on the keyboard (it's above the "4" key) + press the Power button once.

  3. When your Chromebook starts up, release the Refresh key.

Q: What is a Clever badge?

  • Clever is a system we use to authenticate students one time using their Google credentials (username and password). It then allows them to access other systems without the need to remember additional credentials.

  • Currently, they must log into the computer and then go to https://clever.com/in/stcharlesb and log in again using their Google credentials.

  • With the upcoming change, all students using a Chromebook issued through the school will see a different screen at login. They can then choose to use the badge at that point by simply holding it up to the webcam or they can use their Google credentials.

  • If they choose to use the badge, they will be logged into the computer and Clever at the same time, saving a step.

  • If they continue to use their Google credentials, they will still need to log into Clever after gaining access to the computer.

  • For students using other devices (not SCB-issued Chromebooks), they will continue using them the same way. The only difference is, once they go to Clever, they may now opt to use the badge instead of their Google credentials to log in.
